Last millennium, Ben left Victoria University with a degree in physics – then after 30 years of twists and turns, he is back there working as a UX developer in the Library, driving innovation in knowledge delivery and discovery at the interface between information science and information technology, one of the last battlegrounds between print and digital. To many, search might look like a UX problem that is well on the way to being solved. Google’s algorithm can be uncanny in its ability to serve up “hits” when we do a search – and increasingly even when we aren’t searching. But often in information or knowledge discovery, we don’t know what a hit is or what we are even searching for. With expectations for keyword-style search so high, the challenge is on to produce better, more intuitive interfaces for exploratory search.
